Most animals are oviparous and, for the many insects do not brood their young, egg-laying represents the last act of parental care. That eggs are deposited properly and in a suitable environment is thus essential for the survival of the species. In this comprehensive review, we detail the multiple levels of regulation that shape this critical decision process, detailing the neurons and circuits involved in the control of when, where and how insects lay eggs.
